My grandmother's kitchen in Aleppo was the smallest room in the house and the one everyone tried to be inside. The copper pots hung on a nail she had driven into the wall herself. The window opened onto a courtyard with a lemon tree, and the light came through the leaves in a way I have not seen anywhere else.

Beautiful. Please keep going with the book.
I want to know more about the sister who died in 1948. Will there be a chapter?
Thomas, the silences are the whole thing. My grandmother did not speak of it once until I was 32.
A kitchen is a country. This is the truest thing I have read in a long time.
